A typical day...?

I had one of those days last week that you never plan on but inevitably happen. You know the one... you have your "to do" list for the day and then little by little you realize nothing's going to get done. Mind you, my "to do" list these days consists mainly of survival tasks; shower, eat, go to the bathroom, feed the kids, etc. Luxury items like real cooking and cleaning have not made it back on the list yet... in time though, right?

Anyway, back to my day... Kaelynn had been sick and running a crazy temperature for a couple of days and was now complaining of ear and side pain. So, time to go to the doctor for probably an ear infection and the aches and pains of the flu. I managed to find a friend to watch Alicia so that I was only taking 2 children to the doctor.

After the doctor checks her out she rules out an ear infection but suspects a possible bladder infection, so we do a urine test. Well, good news.. no bladder infection. Bed news.. there's sugar in her urine. We do a blood glucose test and she has pretty high blood sugar. It's not likely diabetes, but we can't rule it out. She is clearly sick and her body is dehydrated and this could elevate her blood sugars. So, a call to a specialist and the doctor says you need to go to the ER now to get her hydrated. A call to Dad to meet us there, one to my friend to say can Alicia stay with you until who knows when?! And we're off...

The ER doctor ordered a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia and meanwhile they are all trying to figure out the blood sugars. X-ray comes back and he says it's normal so we are admitting her until we can figure out why her blood sugar is so high. Later, we get a call saying the radiologist read the x-ray and she actually does have pneumonia. Hopefully this is good news because it will explain the crazy fever and maybe even the blood sugars and we won't be looking at a diabetes diagnosis.

So, after antibiotics and hydrating her body... our girl is back!! It was so sad seeing her so sick and completely out of it but so great to have her acting like herself again!

Let me tell you when I packed my diaper bagat 10:30 AM that day it did not contain enough supplies for anyone to be gone so long with a one-month old baby! Luckily we were in the pediatric ward and they have size 1 diapers!! After a short doctor's appointment turned into a totally unexpected hospital stay we were able to bring our girl home and start getting life back to normal (what is that, anyway?)

Happy Birthday Alicia!!

Who can believe that my baby girl has already turned two?! What a fun two years it has been, she is such a joy in our family. She brings laughter and smiles to our home everyday and we love her so much. Here are a few pictures of the last two years:

Alicia is a very spunky girl that loves life. She is a daredevil and pretty much not afraid of anything. She gets more bumps and bruises than her big sister every got and for the most part they don't even slow her down. It's definitely something I've had to adjust to. She loves her big sister and little brother very much and her first question in the morning and after her nap is, "Where's Kaelynn?" and then it's "Where's Spencer?" When Kaelynn is at preschool she walks around saying, "Kaelynn where are you?" It's very precious. She is also a BIG TIME Daddy's girl which just melts her Daddy's heart although with being 2 has come a major stroke of independence that is making her Dad a bit sad that his baby is growing up. Alicia is also a big tease and loves to get people laughing. She often offers someone a bite of something only to snatch it back and eat it herself and immediately laugh and how funny she is. She does a lot of other things that make her good at getting people to laugh also!!

We love her so much and we're so grateful she is part of our family!

Since this blog serves as most of my efforts to "scrapbook" the lives of my children I figured there were a few things I needed to write down before I forget.

**On 2/4/08 I was changing Alicia's diaper and singing a song to her to get her to hold still. Kaelynn was at the table across the room eating when she said, "Mom, can you turn it up so I can hear your song?" So logical.

**On 2/5/08 Kaelynn point blank asked me, "Mom, do you have a baby in your tummy?" This is only strange because I was only a few weeks pregnant and we had not been talking about it or telling anybody yet. Why did she ask? Who knows, a child's intuition? or a lucky guess?

**On 5/8/08 a cooling rack fell onto the floor in our pantry and Kaelynn said, "Mom, I think that rack fell down because it wanted to make cookies!" I've laughed about this one everytime I go to get that cooling rack down.

**On 10/1/08 I was changing Spencer's diaper when I remarked that his umbilical cord had fallen off. Kaelynn was excited to observe the changing process more closely now that it was off. After we were done and sitting on the couch she said, "Mom, when is his pointer thing going to come off too?" This led to the inevitable discussion of boy versus girl parts.

I love reminiscing about some of these funny things she says and also love that I have found a way to document them so I'll remember them forever. We sure love this girl of ours!
